Baby your Makeup Brushes with Baby Shampoo!

|
Cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges are an important step to a perfectly made up face!

You can buy a special makeup brush cleanser or just use shampoo! Shampoo works just as well as the special makeup brush cleansers. You can also use baby shampoo or those 2 in 1 baby shampoos to make your brushes a little softer. If shampoo works on your hair then it will work great on your makeup brushes too!

Buying every kind of different makup brush for every different little makeup application is really not necessary either! I think just a foundation/powder brush, blush brush, and a contour and angled eyeshadow brush is enough!

I use powder foundation and I use a foundation brush. A brush works way better than those sponges that come with the compact! Applying your powder foundation is so much easier and it goes on evenly. Using a soft brush feels so much nicer on your face too!

Try to wash your brushes once a week! Not cleaning your brushing will harbor bacteria and oils, which will cause breakouts. The oils on the brush that come from your skin will also oxidize your makeup making it turn orange… Clean brushes will grab a hold of makeup and deposit makeup on your face evenly.

Gently clean your brushes, don’t be rough or you may pull out hairs. Lay your brushes flat down without letting the wet bristles touch anything if possible. Laying the bristles over the sink works. If you stand them on end the handles or bristles may break. Washing your brushes weekly will save you money too, because they will last you for years and years!

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Makeup's Shelf Life!?

|

I wanted to talk about makeup and how long it lasts in your vanity. A beauty of the Femme Facade community asked this question on another post.

Knowing when to keep or toss your makeup is very important in keeping your face away from infection and bacteria and it will also keep you from losing money on makeup too!

First and foremost use common sense when examining your makeup. If the consistency, smell, and looks of your makeup is different than when you first bought it is probably best to toss it. Also remember to keep your lids screw on tightly. And try to buy products that come in a pump bottle rather than a jar.
Mascara that has been unopened can be stored for 2 to 3 years. If opened it should be tossed after 6 months at the most. Tip: do not pump mascara wand in and out of the tube it will dry out faster.
Foundation can be kept for a year or two, while powder should last for several years since bacteria will find it hard to survive in the dry powder. The same goes for powder blushes.

Powder eye shadow and eyeliner will lasts for years too.

Lipstick is debatable some say 2 years well others say it will last up to 4 years. If it taste or smell bad then toss it.

Sunscreen should be tossed a year after it has been opened. If unopened sunscreen can last a few years. There is often an expiration date on the sunscreen bottle.

Moisturizers will last 2 to 3 years if unopened. After you open moisturizers they should be tossed after 6 months! Wow I did not know that! Perhaps I should not be using a different Bath and Body Works cream everyday! I just love all the different scents and often do not feel like wearing the same one everyday. I’ll have to limit myself to 2 to 3 every 6 months….

I hope this helps you out there when debating rather to toss that makeup!

Cleanser and Sunscreen in One!

|
Have you heard about St.Ives new cleanser that has SPF 10 built right into it?

Well, unfortunately this product will NOT do exactly what it fully claims. Sunscreen cannot be put on through a cleanser very efficiently. If you wash off the cleanser then there cannot be much sunscreen on your face or hands.

Plus I would think that cleansing ingredients would actually work against any sunscreen staying on your face. Not too mention that you are suppose to splash your face with water to remove this St.Ives cleanser. Water removes sunscreen. Apparently a little SPF will stay on your face. Also if you look at the ingredients in this St.Ives cleanser you will see that there is only titanium dioxide. There is no zinc oxide. So this sunscreen/cleanser would not protect you very well from UVA rays.

Plus there is always the small fact that many doctors say that an SPF 15 or 30 NOT 10 is recommended for everyday!

Some skincare products have high claims. People should not believe all the claims on products. This cleanser/sunscreen will not fully protect you from UVA and UVB rays. This sunscreen/cleanser will provide some UVB protection. I hope this post reaches some people! Use this in addition to your regular sunscreen.

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Smoky Bronzed Eyes and Cheeks with a Summer Twist!

|

Bronzer is a great way to get a sun-kissed glow on your face!

The hard part is finding the right one for your skin, just another test of trial and error, but the results will be stunning! You can also research on the makeupalley.com boards to find what one works on other people’s same skin tone as you.

The hot thing right now is putting blush on top of the bronzer, it makes you cheeks look more natural. They have even started making bronzer that come with blush already swirled into the bronzer. Cover Girl makes one that has two shades of bronzer and the blush. Or just buy a separate blush and bronzer.

A new summer eye look is the smoky bronze eyes with a bright eyeliner too! Bright turquoise, green, and yellow all make for summer fun! I personally think the turquoise would be the best! I am definitely going to try this, especially when I go out at night with my new turquoise flowery summer dress!

EyeShadow Staying Power!

|
Does you beautiful eye makeup that you did so precisely in the morning melt right off by night?
Or after a night out dancing, you look in the mirror and see that your sexy smoky eyes have gone up in flames!

Well, that happens to me with my oily eyelids.

The secret to lasting eye makeup is an eyeshadow primer!

Yes, you can even wear the cheap Wet 'n' Wild makeup and it will stay on! So Balogne to all those that say you have to wear expensive makeup so it will stay on! Nope, Wet 'N' Wild will just as well with eyeshadow primer!

Three of the best eyeshadow primers are:

1. Urban Decay Primer Potion! It is $16, but it will last forever, because you only need to use a little dot on your eyelids. I have used the Urban Decay primer potion and it works really good!

2. Lumene Eye Makeup Base. It is only $10 so that is better and I have heard it works just as good as the Urban Decay one.

3. Too Faced Shadow Insurance. It is $17 and is another primer that gets raves!

I have also heard that just using a cheap non-scented chapstick will work well too and make your eyeshadow appear brighter! I may have to try this sometime!

Rosacea Series: Treatments

|
Control your rosacea flare ups with these treatment tips!

First of all since everybody's skin is different, rosacea treatments will be different for everybody. Treatments depend on how severe your rosacea is at the moment. Doctors can prescribe antibiotics and topical treatments to get your rosacea flare ups under control now! Using a long term topical treatment will help you from having a rosacea relapse. Finacea, plexion, metrocream or metrogel can help.

When needed doctors can also perform laser treatments or other surgical procedures to help eliminate blood vessels and severe redness.

The skincare that you choose can affect your rosacea. Skincare made for sensitive skin often works best. Avoid anything that stings or irritates your skin. Being gentle with your face is key. Euresin redness relief products work well.

After you wash your face make sure to wait about 10 to 20 minutes before applying topical medicine. If you apply the medicine in the morning wait another 5 to 10 minutes before applying sunscreen and then at least 20 minutes before applying makeup.

Do not use abrasive scrubs or acids if you skin gets irritated. I have heard or people with rosacea using retin-A, though people often buffer it with creams or wash it off after 30 minutes. The retin-A does not really help with the rosacea, it helps with wrinkles and acne. Read my other post on retinoids.

Don't forget your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses when going outside. Wear sunscreen everyday rain or shine! Read my other posts on sunscreen if you want to make sure yours is protecting you correctly!

Whatever you are using if it works then stick with it. Do not buy new products often, stick to what works. Use a new product for a month to fully see if it works or not.

I hope this helps you! For more information seek your doctor or read the Rosacea.org website. There is also a Rosacea Board to gain advice from others who have Rosacea!

Now go and enjoy your summertime! Happy Friday Everyone!

Rosacea Series: Causes of Rosacea

|
Yes, unfortunately there is no known cause of rosacea, but there has been theories.

Rosacea may be caused by facial blood vessels dilating too easily, the increased blood near the skin surface may make the skin appear more red and flushed. Rosacea may also be caused by "irritation of follicles, sun damage of the connective tissue under the skin, an abnormal immune or inflammatory response, or psychological factors," as stated in rosacea.org.

On-going research is being performed on what causes rosacea. A 2007 study "...has determined that it is not one, but a combination of two abnormal factors, that result in rosacea." "The researchers found that over-production of two interactive inflammatory proteins results in excessive levels of a third protein that causes rosacea symptoms..."

The study also said rosacea is not necessary caused by one bacteria even though rosacea is often treated with antibiotics. People with rosacea seem to have more peptides in their system than other people. Too much cathelicidin can cause these peptides, which will cause the rosacea symptoms.

This study showed that bacteria is not the right target when it comes to rosacea and that they should be focusing on these other factors.

I hope this on-going research will find the cause and cure one day for people with rosacea. Right now I hope this brings you some hope for the future. I posted this pretty picture of a waterfall to get your mind off of it, isn't it beautiful!

In my next post I will post about some treatments that will hopefully cease flare ups from happening at all!

Rosacea Series: Triggers

|

What causes Rosacea is unknown, but we do know what can trigger rosacea flare ups!
“According to a National Rosacea Society survey, some of the most common rosacea triggers include sun exposure, emotional stress, hot or cold weather, wind, alcohol, spicy foods, heavy exercise, hot baths, heated beverages, and certain skin-care products.”
Hot flahses may also trigger a rosacea flare up.

That may seem like a lot to avoid, but once you get into a habit you may find it easier. (note: It only takes 21 days for humans to form a habit).

Monitoring yourself about what causes the rosacea triggers will help. Keeping a diary to record the beverages and food that triggers your flare ups is a good idea.

I also wanted to note about the heavy exercise trigger. Exercising in early morning or at night when it is cool will help to decrease flare ups. Opening a window, drinking cold liquids, a damp towel, and exercising in short intervals at a time can help as well. Just do not give up exercising it is the key to a healthy long life and it will help reduce stress which is another trigger of rosacea.

And remember everybody's skin is different so a trigger may not affect you every time or at all.

More on Rosacea to come in my next post!

Rosacea Series: What is Rosacea?

|

Rosacea is disorder that causes redness and swelling occurring mostly on the facial skin.

14 million Americans have rosacea and many do not even know it! So you are not alone!

Rosacea can be very severe or very mild. In mild cases doctors, let alone you, will not even recognize it as rosacea and may write it off as sun damage or acne.
Rosacea usually occurs after the age 30 years old. People with fair skin that blush and get flushed easily are often affect by rosacea. Rosacea has been called adult acne, but it is NOT acne! Acne is one condition and rosacea is another.

Unfortunately, doctors do not know the cause of rosacea yet. Overtime rosacea may get ruddier. If left untreated red bumps, swollen skin, and rhinophyma, which enlarges the nose may occur. As soon as you sense rosacea see a doctor to receive treatments in order to keep the rosacea from getting worst. You can however treat rosacea to keep it from flaring up!

Some symptoms are:
- redness on the cheeks, forehead, and nose. May also occur on the neck, chest, scalp, or ears.
- eyes may get irritated and watery.
- small blood vessels on the face.

- facial burning, itching, and stinging

I will post about some triggers of rosacea in my next post!

A Reason to Wear SPF 30 and Not SPF 15

|

On cosmeticsdesign.com a new test in Europe was done on sunscreens and whether or not their SPF 15 claim is legit. 11 out of 14 sunscreens had an SPF of 12.5 or above. Some only had an protection of 7.1 about half of the sunscreen bottle’s claim of SPF 15! Some of these sunscreen bottles were from some supermarket brands and big brands such as L’Oreal and Nivea!

Europe’s sunscreen generally protects better than American’s sunscreens too! More FDA checks need to be performed. Read the active ingredient labels to be safe too. America also needs to catch up more with Europe on our UVA protection. Fortunately this is happening more and more. It is just odd that it has taken so much longer, American Dermatologists did not start worrying about UVA rays until the 1990s.

On ewg.com it was stated, "If used properly, sunscreen rated SPF15 will protect you against 93 per cent of UVB rays. SPF 60 will protect you against about 98 per cent of UVB rays."

So buy sunscreen that is SPF 30 and then you will know that you are at least getting an SPF 15!

Don't forget to put on 1/4 teaspoon for the face and a shot glass for the body!

5 Scary Beauty and Skincare Tips throughout History!

|

Happy Friday the 13th! I love to watch scary moves on Friday the 13ths and get scared! So here are some scary beauty and skincare tricks that people have used throughout history.

1.The Romans and Ancient Egyptians used makeup that was filled with poisonous mercury and lead.

2. Makeup also caused blindness, deformities, and death. During the Renaissance white lead (ceruse) was used to powder their faces white.

3. Flesh eating fish have been used for a good foot pedicure. Doctor fish like to eat the gross flaky dead skin and not fleshy meat. The foot pedicure by fish was popular in Japan and parts of Asia where people would put their feet in the pools of the Doctor fish and let the good doctors do their work. Apparently you can still get this done in certain spas too! No thanks I will pass letting fish eat my feet and just buy one of the products that I mentioned in my post the other day.

4. While on the topic of getting eaten. Leeches have been around for centuries as treatment to cure you of illnesses. Now Demi Moore goes to the spa to get the leeche treatment done as an anti-aging facial.

5. In the early 1900s women went blind from using Lash Lure mascara! Talk about beauty being in the eye of the beholder! (ok, that’s not nice)

Well I hope you are a little scared and thank God that we live in our era!
You all have a great weekend!

Get a Deep Dark Tan with Sunless Tanning this Summer

|
Fake bake, sunless tanning, whatever you want to call it, getting the bronzed sun kissed glow is hard to achieve.

There are many sunless tanning products out there. Choosing the right product depends on your natural skin coloring and the product. DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is the ingredient that causes your skin to darken. How much DHA in a product determines how dark it will make your skin.

Sunless tanning booths in tanning salons have the highest DHA products that you can get. Magic tanning and airbrush tanning are the terms of the high end products. Find a salon where you can get a special one month unlimited magic tanning package for $70 or less. You can also buy small bottles of these extreme tanning products and apply it yourself using a special applicator. Buying the products from a tanning supply store is a lot cheaper than going to the salon, but you risk goofing up on the hard to reach places. Practice and practice, or get a willing partner to help you.

Gradual tanning lotions are easy to apply and slowly give you a sun-kissed glow. The gradual tan lotions are pretty much goof proof with no streaks, though they often will not produce that deep dark tan that a sunless tanning product will produce. Jergens and Hawaiian Tropics both make a great gradual tan product that I have had good results with.

To find out what products work for you go to sunless.com that is the board for learning all about sunless tanning, from application, skin type, products, wait time, and about sunscreen too!

I hope you find a sunless tanning product that you like and will be rocking a dark golden tan this summer!

4 of the Most Bizarre Skin Care Ingredients!

|

There’s been snail slime, snake venom, frog skin, and now bird’s poop. Talk about some bizarre ingredients in skin care products!

All of these intricate creatures have been study to produce new skincare products. I am all for continuously studying to find new and better ingredients to help better our lives. However, do any of these products really work?

Here’s is a quick gist of what each one does:

1. Bullfrog's skin has antioxidants that may help fight the free radicals that affect your skin and cause wrinkles. Frog skin was also said to be water soluble, more economical, and perhaps more effective.

2. Snake venom is suppose to freeze wrinkles and fine lines like botox does. It has been produced a few years ago in products with a snake-like venom peptide ingredient. It was all the rage a couple years ago when some of the major Hollywood stars, like Gwyneth Paltrow, would use the hard to find UltraLuxe and Viprodex snake venom type products.

3. Snail Slim apparently performs like glycolic acid, so it suppose to help acne scars, sun spots, and may help fine lines too. Elicina makes an acne product that contains the snail slim.

4. Bird’s poop, actually only the bird droppings from a Nightingale will do do. Apparently the Geishas in Japan used this as their beauty secret to keep their skin smooth and healthy. Geishas often used Nightingale droppings to wipe off all their heavy duty makeup. Guanine found in the droppings is an enzyme that bleaches and exfoliates. The Nightingale bird droppings have been used in London recently too and have been touted as perfectly safe. UV light is used to remove the bacteria. And thankfully it is fragrance free too!

More studies need to be done to prove that they actually work, but everybody skin is different. So if you are willing to try out one of these products please report back, I would love to hear a review!

Put a Cap on that Deep Moisturizing Conditioner Treatment!

|

How do you do your weekly moisturizing conditioning treatment? Do you smear the whole hair treatment all over your hair and scalp?

It is recommended to only put the moisturizing treatment on just the length of your hair, not the scalp. This is important so your scalp is not oily the next day. Every once in awhile though I do the scalp with just a little bit of conditioner treatment anyway. I just feel like my scalp needs special treatment too.

I also wear a shower cap over my moisturizing treatment for 5 to 10 minutes or more. Wearing the shower cap keeps the heat in and makes the moisturizing treatment more effective. You could even blow dry your hair for 10 minutes too. That is a bit much to me. I am not going to get out of the bath tub to blow heat on my hair, just to get back in the tub and wash off. Can we say defeating the purpose of a relaxing bath again? :)

By the way, rubbing your hair with a towel will only cause breakage. Just wrap your wet hair up in the towel.

Let me know your deep moisturizing tips?

Bubble Bath, Bath Salts, and Bath Bombs!

|

Did you take a nice relaxing bubble bath this weekend? I fit one in there, it was very nice. I always try to take a bath once a week. I did not actually use bubbles though. Nope, I like bath salts. Bath salts make the water softer and more moisturizing. Bath salts also do not cause scum around the bath, like bubbles. In fact I think the bath salts help to eliminate scum. There are lots of different brands and flavors out there too. I really do not think there is a difference between the types of bath salts. Use whatever brand and flavor you like, regardless how expensive or inexpensive it is.

Bath bombs are very similar to bath salts. They fizz a little bit in the water when you drop one in, but they basically provide the same affects as the bath salts. I have used the Bodycology bath bombs that I got a Big Lots and it was quite a deal, three for $2! I have also heard great reviews for the Lush bath bombs and all of the Lush bath products, which is why I advertise their site. Many people seem to like Lush just as much as the Bath and Body Works products, if not more!

Soften Your Rough Feet with these 3 tips!

|

Having really dry rough callused feet is not fun or too pretty for summertime.
Don't worry there are ways to dramatically soften your feet so they will be silky smooth in that hot new sandal you just bought!

1. Every night wear lotion or a thick cream would be even better with socks. Let me stress again, every night, this is key.
(I have been doing this all winter and I am very surprise how much this helps to make my feet softer! I take my showers in the morning and apply my lotion all over my body then at night time I apply my thick cream to my feet. I also apply the cream to my delicate chest area too, why not make them soft as can be as well:)

2. There is also AHA lotion that you can use to exfoliate your feet, but if you put it on the top of your feet make sure to put sunscreen on the top of your feet during the day. Because AHA lotion makes you more photosensitive to the sunlight. But hey, wearing sunscreen on the top of your feet will only help your feet to stay younger too!
(I am going to have to try to remember to put sunscreen on the top of my feet even if I don't wear AHA lotion, especially since it is summertime and I am wearing sandals more now.)

3. Exfoliating your feet with an upper end pumice stones work well too, remember to wet the stone and use an exfoliating scrub with it.

Exfoliating with a foot file I have heard works even better than the pumice stones, specifically the Microplane in the orb style.

Exfoliating with the "As Seen On T.V." Ped Egg also gets great reviews too, more so over the pumice stones.

I have heard that more people like the Microplane foot file, but it is up to you if you want to splurge on your precious feet that work hard everyday to hold you up, or not.

A cream with with 40% Urea in the ingredients list will work well if you want to get specific about the cream you use. Topix Urix 40 is one to buy with that much urea. Just plain petroleum jelly will work great too. Slather it on, put on your socks, and have a good night sleep dreaming about your soft as a baby's feet in the morning.

I love Bath and Body Works body creams too! They are so thick, smell heavenly, and rub in nice and fast. However, today I went to Target and lo and behold they had another one of my all time favorite lotions! It is the Vaseline brand lotion in Coco Butter, but they had the lotion in the Target brand! Yay, finally! I have been waiting for the Coco Butter one to come out in the Target Brand! I didn't think it was going to happen, but it did! This Vaseline Coco Butter lotion is the best, it smells great, rubs in nicely, pretty thick for a lotion, and the best of all has petroleum as the second ingredient!

Petroleum is the most moisturizing ingredient! And I have search far and long for a lotion that has petroleum as the second ingredient and Vaseline's Coco Butter lotion is the only one that has it. Yup, even the other Vaseline brands do not have petroleum as the second ingrediant oddly enough.

So I am really excited about the better deal of Target's brand Coco Butter lotion. Now Target brand really is just as good as the big brands. Same ingredients, same size, for a better deal!

Remember it is all about the ingredients!

Do you Bathe with a Bath Pouf, Sponge, Bath Brush, or Not?

|
Rub a dub tub. Soaping up and getting clean is such a nice refreshing feeling.
What do you use to get clean? Bath pouf, sponge, bath brush, washcloth, hands, bar soap….

I love lathering up with my bath pouf! Now I have not always used a bath pouf and I even stopped using one for a long time, I just used my hands with my shower gel. All the talk that went around about bath poufs harboring bacteria scared me good!

And bath poufs do harbor bacteria! The trick is to throw out your pouf often and you are good to go! Throw out your bath pouf once a month to avoid bacteria. Also using a new bath pouf just feels so good. After just using my hands, I discovered that using a pouf is actually more economical because I do not use very much bath gel. I only use about a quarter size drop on my pouf and it lathers up my whole body nicely.

Throwing out your bath pouf once a month is really not that expensive either, depending on where you buy your pouf. I’ve found that Wal-Mart has some great poufs for about $1 and they are nice soft poufs that don’t fall apart either. So that’s about $12 for a year’s supply of bath poufs, not bad at all. You will feel like you are pampering yourself in the bath, and you are, but for a great deal!

Bath and Body Works also has bath poufs, but they feel like they are a bit to tightly woven and not quite soft enough, but each to their own. Plus, even when Bath and Body Works has their semi-annual sale their bath poufs are still not at Wal-Mart’s great prices!

Not to tempt you, but Bath and Body Works is having their summer semi-annual sale right now! It just started this week. I may have to stop by and get some great smelling shower gels for $3 each!

I will post more about the Bath and Body Works month long semi-annual sale as the month goes on!

We are have pores. Some people have small pores and some large. Sometimes our pores are clogged and that can make them looker larger than they actually are.

Unfortunately, large pores are genetic. There is really nothing you can do it about. You cannot shrink your pores, don't believe the skincare products hype. So be happy with your pores and don't use a magnifying mirror. :)

I have large pores on and around my nose. The permanent stubborn blackheads that live in them do not help my pores to look smaller either.

Fortunately, you can make your pores appear smaller temporarily through skincare products!

Cleaning out my blackheads has been a task of mine for some 17 years... As you can tell, I am talking about the serious stubborn blackheads here. No blackhead extractor could touch these blackheads. Blackheads won the battle. Several facialists could not even remove these babies.

Anyway, some products that have worked temporarily for me is one of my favorite mask, Queen Helene Mint Julep mask, which contains sulfur and kaolin clay. Retinoids and AHA also work to keep my pores clear! Exfoliation works well to keep the pores clear so definitely incorporate a weekly mask into you routine. Or if you are not the mask type, then try the Alpha Hydrox 10% gel. Whatever exfoliation product you use just make sure it has the right pH!

So if BHA does not work for you, as I tried faithfully year after year, then try one of the products that I have mentioned.

May you pores appear smaller tomorrow!
